The Marathon continues again.
The 2019 BET Awards was held last night (June 23) at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. Hosted by actress Regina King, the evening was filled with stunning performances and emotional tributes.
For the evening’s first performance, Cardi B opened up the show with a raunchy performance of “Clout” alongside Offset followed by her latest single, “Press”. Cardi also took home the award for Best Album.
With two giant babies on stage, DaBaby flexed his CEO status with his performance of “Suge”. Elsewhere, Lil Nas X lit up a saloon with Billy Ray Cyrus for a trip down to “Old Town Road”.
Migos and Mustard made brought their wet and wild party for their live rendition of “Pure Water”. Of course, Black excellence was alive and well thanks to H.E.R. and YBN Cordae’s peformance of “Lord Is Coming”
Later on during the evening, Lil Baby and City Girls’ Yung Miami electrified the theater with a medley of “Act Up, “Close Friends”, and “Pure Cocaine” and Lizzo was the bride to be with set “Truth Hurts”. Meanwhile, Fantasia brought nothing but soul with “Enough” and Kirk Franklin, Jonathan McReynolds, Erica Campbell and Kelly Price took the audience to church with “Love Theory”.
For this year’s Lifetime Achievement award, Mary J Blige was honored the award presented by Rihanna. After a tribute to the Queen of Hip Hop & Soul, MJB performed a medley of classic hits and brought out special guests Lil’ Kim (“I Can Love You Better”) and Method Man (“All I Need”).
The legacy and philanthropy of Nipsey Hussle was honored as the late rapper was bestowed this year’s Humanitarian award. After his family accepted the award on his behalf, his music was recognized. Marsha Ambrosius set the heartfelt tribute with “Real Big” followed by YG bringing saluted the red and blue with the “Last Time That I Checc’d”. Khaled and John Legend opened the pearly gates for “Higher” and then kept the celebration going with Meek Mill and Jeremih with “Weather The Storm” and “You Stay”.
Absent but their presence was felt were Nipsey Hussle who was honored as this year’s Best Male Hip Hop artist and Travis Scott and Drake for Best Collaboration (“SICKO MODE”). Bruno Mars was awarded Best Male R&B artist while Beyonce was crowned Best Female R&B artist. Congrats to all.
