Jada Pinkett Smith’s new Facebook Watch series Red Table Talk has made headlines before, but her latest episode focused on addiction and substance abuse. Specifically, Jada’s mother’s history of addiction, as well as Jada’s lifelong battle with an addictive personality.
On Monday July 9, Jada detailed the struggles she encountered during the 20 years her mother, Adrienne Canfield Norris, abused drugs. Today, Adrienne is now 27 years clean. After Adrienne and special guests August Alsina and Ashley Marie shared their personal journeys of addiction, Jada came clean to the public about her struggle with binging.
“I’ve had my own addictions that I’ve had to get over. And it just made me realize that really great people just get caught up… I’ve had several [addictions]. My sort of addictions jump. They jump around. When I was younger, I definitely think I had a sex addiction of some kind. Yes, that everything could be fixed by sex.”
Jada also faced an addiction to working out in the gym, and binge drinking. While binge drinking home alone and going on her third bottle of wine, Jada believed she hit rock bottom. After a moment of realization that night, Jada quit drinking cold turkey.
According to the American Addictions Center, once a behavior becomes impulsive in nature and contributes to a range of physical and mental health problems and the person is unable to stop, it is termed an addiction. “I am a binger, and I always have to watch myself and just how I can get just obsessed with things.”
